From Exhaustion to Empowerment: My Journey Back to Health

Five years ago, I looked very different than I do today—and not just on the outside. I was carrying an extra 60 pounds, my body was inflamed, and I felt completely drained. On top of that, I struggled with depression and exhaustion that seemed impossible to shake.

The worst part was that I was “doing everything right.” I worked out intensely 3–5 times a week. I tracked my macros, counted my calories, and followed what was considered a “well-balanced” diet. But instead of thriving, I was stuck in survival mode.

I didn’t feel like my healthcare advocates were really listening. One doctor even told my husband that he needed to hold me accountable for how hard I was “actually” working and not allow me to “lie to myself” In rolled the diagnosis’ and the medications…

My gastroenterologist → IBS.. two pharmaceutical drugs

My endocrinologist → hypothyroid… one pharmaceutical drug

My primary care → anxiety … two pharmaceutical drugs

After digging deeper, I discovered the truth: my body was screaming for help. My cortisol was completely imbalanced, my cortisone levels were through the roof, and my hormones were far from stable. I was diagnosed with PCOS and hypothyroidism and put on multiple medications. My periods were so painful I would miss days of work, relying on muscle relaxers and sleeping pills just to function.

People often ask me, “What did you do to lose the weight?”

I worked really, really hard. There is no “quick fix” to healing your body. It took me years of stress, overworking, and people pleasing to get myself in this situation, and it took me years of balance, self forgiveness, and boundary setting to get myself back!

The Turning Point

I knew I couldn’t live like that forever. So I shifted my focus—from chasing calories and “quick-fix” solutions to uncovering the root causes of my health struggles.

I cut out hormone disruptors hiding in everyday products. I stopped relying on protein shakes and “diet foods” marketed as healthy. Instead, I nourished my body with whole foods and timed my meals to work with my hormones, not against them.

Slowly but surely, my body began to heal. Today, I am 100% medication-free, mostly pain-free, and living with more energy and joy than I ever thought possible. I don’t dread my cycle. I don’t live in constant inflammation. And most importantly, I no longer feel trapped in my own body.

Why I Share This

I share my story not because it’s unique, but because it’s far too common. So many people, women especially, are struggling silently with symptoms they think are “normal”, common or unfixable. I’m here to tell you—they’re not. You can feel better. You can heal. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Tools That Helped Me:

  1. Fast like a girl by Dr. Mindy Pelz– all women should be fasting and working out in accordance with their hormones.

  2. Functional medicine testing– I needed measurable input and markers to focus on and work towards.

  3. Cutting out toxic products from my home. This part is HUGE. You do not need to throw everything away and start over. Each time you run out of a product, search for a healthier substitute, one… at… a… time!

  4. Support and slowing down. Find the practitioners who listen and support your healing. Slow down and allow it to happen!
